St. Hilaire: "By what authority are you doing this?"
Gospel of Jesus Christ according Mark 11.27-33.
Jesus and his disciples return to Jerusalem. And Jesus came and went in the temple, the chief priests, scribes and elders came to him. They asked him: "By what authority are you doing this? Or who gave you authority to do so? "Jesus said to them:" Let me ask you one question. Answer me, and I will tell you by what authority I am doing this. The baptism of John, was it from heaven or men? Answer me. "They did themselves this reasoning:" If we say: 'From heaven, 'he will say:' Why do not you believe him? 'But let us say,' Men '? "They feared the crowd, because everyone believed that John was truly a prophet. They therefore respond to Jesus: "We do not know!" Then Jesus said to them: "Me neither, I will not tell you by what authority I am doing this."

Trinidad, VII, 26-27
It is the Father, the Son who resembles him. It comes from him, this son he can be compared, because it is similar. It is his equal, this Son who performs the same work as him (Jn 5:19) ... Yes, the Son of the Father doeth the works, so he asks us to believe he is the Son of God. It assumes not there a title that would not be owing, it is not on his own works he supports his claim. No! He testifies that this is not his own works, but those of his father. And he testifies and the brilliance of his actions came from her divine birth. But how men could they recognize him as the Son of God in the mystery of that body he served in the man born of Mary? Is to penetrate their heart's faith in him that the Lord was doing all these works: "If I perform the works of my Father, then even if you do not want to believe in me, believe at least my works "(Jn 10:38) ...
If the humility of his body seems an obstacle to believe in his word, he asks us to believe at least in his works. Indeed, why the mystery of his human birth would prevent us there to receive his divine birth? ... "If you do not want to believe in me, believe in my works, to know and recognize that the Father is in me, and I in the Father" ... This is
nature that he has by birth; such is the mystery of a faith that will ensure salvation: not to divide those who are, do not deprive children of their nature, and proclaim the truth born of the Living God of the Living God ... "As the Father who sent me is alive, well, me, I live by the Father" (Jn 6.57) ... "As the Father has life in himself, so he has granted the Son also to have in himself the life" (Jn 5:26).
